Chapter 21

Sierra’s body was still pumping with adrenaline when she stood before Lorna with Gavin and Jillian. Seeing the brainwashed Guardians wasn’t an image Sierra would forget any time soon.

But it was more than that. Tonight, something had changed within her.

For the first time ever, she wanted to take down the Culpatus. Not in a self-defense manner. No, she wanted to hunt them down. Until every Ardere, Umbra, and human were safe. She was ready to go on the offense and take out the head and the neck of the monster—Cormac and Halbert.

Lorna folded Jillian’s mysterious note and put it away. She studied Jillian, probably wondering the same thing Sierra and Gavin had. How had Jillian gotten the note? Jillian herself wore a faraway expression, as if she had no concerns whatsoever.

A knock and then Pia entered. “You wanted to see me?”

“Yes.” Lorna’s face tightened. “As of now, I wish you to focus exclusively on learning how to infiltrate dreams and become an anchor. That’s all.”

Pia’s throat worked at the command, and her eyes widened. Without saying a word, she nodded and exited gracefully.

Sierra wondered how Lorna’s command related to the night’s events. When she had studied up on Charmers, she had learned that those of advanced caliber could intrude on dreams that were already taking place between another Charmer and its subject of interest. Infiltration of dreams, however, was considered precarious and was thus discouraged. The one thing scarier than infiltration was anchoring. Instead of being actively in the dream, a Charmer was used to facilitate the dream for someone else. Cormac had used Calista in this way when seeking Sierra out in her dreams. While doing so, Cormac’s mind had entered a deep unconscious state, called the in-between, a necessity to access Calista’s dreamscaping powers.

When done incorrectly, anchoring carried serious consequences. If the link with the Charmer severed, the other individual’s mind could be lost forever. While the person was still theoretically alive, he would remain sleeping for all eternity. Thus, anchoring was forbidden. For Lorna to order Pia to train actively in both tasks could only mean that the situation was even direr than Sierra believed it to be.

Gavin nudged her, and she realized Lorna had dismissed them, wishing to speak to Jillian alone.

Sierra could sense Gavin’s annoyance at the dismissal. It radiated off him in waves, making her own skin feel itchy. She reached to scratch a spot on her chest, only to realize the lapis stone was flaring angrily. It had never done that before. Normally, the link worked the other way around, notifying Gavin when she was in trouble. She turned to him and noticed the pain in his turquoise eyes. Her hands wrapped around his neck, and she hugged him for a long time.

“How do you feel about spending the night together?” His gravelly voice nearly undid her resolve.
